CIMAP ENSICAEN

Funded in 2008, CIMAP is a research laboratory focused on two main topics which are “excited matter and defects” on one hand and “materials and optics” on the other hand. The wide range of disciplines present in the CIMAP comes from its long tradition in structuring the research in Physics on the scale of Basse-Normandie but also on the National scale through the CIRIL platform, EMIR research federation concerning material irradiation and IRMA research federation concerning material.

CIMAP is administratively linked to four partner institutions. CIMAP is geographically spread over 3 sites : 1 site is hosted by the National Graduate School of Engineering of Caen (ENSICAEN), 1 site is located on the GANIL campus and 1 site is at IUT d’Alençon. CIMAP is a CNRS research unit (UMR 6252) linked to the Physics Institute (INP, primary) and to the Chemistry Institute (INC, secondary). CIMAP is also a CEA unit linked to the Fundamental Research Division (DRF) through the Saclay Institute of Matter and Radiation (IRAMIS). Finally, CIMAP is linked to the Caen University (UCN) leading to its strong involvement in education.

CIMAP is a multidisciplinary research laboratory whose scientific objectives relate to excited matter and defects creation on the one hand and to the materials and optics on the other hand. Always linked to matter, radiation and their interactions, it covers topics from material (gas phase, solid state, biological material) modification by ion irradiation to material (laser crystals, semi-conductors, thin films) for light emission and conversion. Our ambition is to take advantage of our pluridisciplinarity to enrich the different tools and scientific culture available in the laboratory to push further away the frontiers of knowledge in these fields.

Our scientific activities are performed and structured in 7 teams which are the following :

  • MADIR Team "MAterials, Defects and IRradiation"
    Scientific scope : study of irradiation effects in matter using the different GANIL beam facilities. Structural modifications of inorganic materials under irradiation, study of the processes involved in the radiation-induced ageing of polymers, irradiation of complexe organic molecules and astrophycical ice analogs, nanostructuration using ion beam.

  • NIMPH Team "Nanostructures for integrated microelectronics and photonics"
    Scientific scope : growths and studies of thin films of semiconductor or dielectric containing dielectric, semiconductor or metallic nanostructures and/or dopants such as rare earth ionsdevelopement of thin film and heterostructure materials with optimized functional properties (light emission, emissivity, particular dielectric or electrical properties...).

  • OML Team “Optics, Materials and Laser”
    Scientific scope : understanding of the spectroscopic properties of active ions in solids, fabrication and characterization of rare earth doped materials for laser systems and sensors, Development of new laser sources (mainly fiber lasers and amplifiers) and optical measurement techniques, Study of transverse effects in solid-state lasers, beam shaping.

  • PM2E Team "Properties of Materials for Energy Savings"
    Scientific scope : understanding of the properties of materials which have applications in energy saving, in particular biosourced composites and III-V semiconductors. Clearly, the knowledge of the microstructure/processing/properties relationships should allow to optimize the device performance.

  • SIMUL Team "Simulation"
    Scientific scope : developping theoretical models in close relationships with the research themes of the experimental groups. Dynamics induced by electronic excitation at the molecular scale, ion beam transport in capillaries.

CIMAP laboratory, through the CIRIL user platform, has in charge the interdisciplinary researches at the GANIL facility (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds). CIRIL platform supports the users to perform their experiments. For this purpose, the CIRIL manages the scientific selection of the experiments through an interdisciplinary Program Advisory Board (iPAC), welcomes the external users, develops the beam lines including top level one-line instrumentation equipments.
