- Research activities :

Interaction of ionizing radiation (atomic and cluster ion beams, electrons) with matter probed by electron emission, secondary ion emission, X-ray-emission, sputtering of neutrals from solid surfaces; surface modification, channeling, irradiation effects (cosmic rays, solar wind) in astrophysical materials like silicates and ices ( ANR IGLIAS) probed by FTIR infrared absorption and TOF-SIMS.



The emission of secondary particles (electron ejection, sputtering of neutrals and ions) is a messenger which can help understanding the microscopic mechanisms of energy deposition in condensed matter by particle bombardment. Experimental approaches include the "catcher" method (neutrals), time-of-flight measurements for sputtering of secondary ions and electron ejection, and imaging techniques (XY-TOF-SIMS for secondary ions). Effects induced at the surface and in the bulk are studied by e.g. FTIR spectroscopy and LEED (surface modification). Recent work concerns application of heavy highly charged ion beams to astrophysics and astrochemistry (radiolysis of astrophysical ices, surface modification of silicates). The accelerator facilities of GANIL allow studying ion-surface collisions in a wide range of projectile velocities: high velocity heavy ions (1-100 MeV/u, electronic energy loss dominates) and also low velocity highly charged ions (keV/q) are available. In this latter case, nuclear stopping (elastic collision cascades) is more important and further effects related to the high projectile charge and corresponding high potential energy can occur.
