CAPILLARIES

Ion guiding through capillaries :
Started in 2006, the study of ion transmission through insulating glass capillaries is still active, aiming a better understanding of the ion-insulator surface interaction as well as their practical use for nano-beam production (see PELIICAEN project). Two main breakthroughs in the period 2010-2015 have been obtained : the first one is the introduction of a new shape of capillaries, conical, which has been shown to be much more easy to tune with a stronger transmitted ion beam intensity (ETH collaboration) ; the second one is the complete (experimental and simulation) understanding of ion transmission at high energies where it has been clearly shown that guiding is only due to small angle scattering [3]. Apart from experiments, theoretical description of the underlying processes is in progress (see SIMUL group).
