Electron and Ion Spectrometer

This experimental apparatus is used to measure absolute differential cross section (d2σ/dEdθ) for collision-induced electrons or ion emission from atomic or molecular targets. The projectile ion beam crosses orthogonally an effusive atomic or molecular jet created from a gaseous or liquid sample. The collision-induced products (electrons, anions or cations) are selected according to their kinetic energy per charge (E/q) ratio by means of a 45° parallel-plate electrostatic analyzer. This spectrometer has an energy resolution of 5% and an angular acceptance of 2°. It is mounted on a rotatable ring for setting the observation angle θ (20° < θ < 130°). When detecting anions, the set-up is modified to avoid electron contamination. At the entrance and the exit of the spectrometer magnetic fields of 10-4 T are applied to filter out electrons with kinetic energies below 2 keV. The magnetic fields are provided by pairs of coils which are designed to minimize the residual field inside the electrostatic analyzer.
